Mochi: The First Few Months Home

We resume the story in mid-October 2019, when Mochi came home. Three main things stand out about her first few months at home: vet visits, training, and shopping.

Mochi’s vet is Dr Craig Hopkins at Ferguson Animal Hospital in North Providence, He has been her vet since birth, and we decided to stay with him after Mochi came home with us. We have been happy with her health and her healthcare. She was spayed on April 1, 2019.

For early training, Mochi went to “Puppy Kindergarten” and “Puppy Socialization” at Pooch Pawsitive. I took a lot of photos of Mochi socializing with other puppies. Most of them are blurred, since puppies tend to socialize vigorously. Mochi is the black blur in the foreground of this photo.

Heidi and her team provide excellent training for dogs and their humans. The training center is in the East Providence branch of Rumford Pet.

We’ve done a lot of our Mochi-related shopping at Rumford Pet, and like the store. We also like Pet Valu in Barrington. We used Chewy for online shopping when a deal was good enough to overcome our preference for shopping local.

Of course health, training, and shopping are project that will continue throughout Mochi’s life. We – canine and humans alike – especially need to keep working on training!

Dog Walking: Webbed Dog and Before

Webbed Dog is my first dog walking business, but it’s far from my first dog walking. Here’s some of my doggy history.

When at graduate school at UMass Amherst, bike rides used to include a count of dogs encountered. A dog/mile ratio greater than one was one benchmark for a good ride.

When I lived and taught in Boston, I was great friends with a Rottweiler. I often walked him, and he stayed with me when his human was away.

When in Bethesda, Maryland, I did some independent dog walking.

Since moving to Barrington, Rhode Island, I’ve done some dog walking through Wag! I feel positive about Wag! But it’s not for me as a dog walker, and it wouldn’t be for me as a dog parent.

My love for dogs has only increased since Mochi joined the family. I look forward to getting to know your dog(s)!

What’s the site icon? It’s that little image in your browser tab for this site.

How does it differ from the site logo? The site logo is the image at the top right of every post and page of this site.

The above answers are short, simple, and specific. If you want more detail, I recommend RockPaperSimple’s account of the difference between icon and logo.

For this site, I’m challenged by the site logo decision, and confident in my site icon decision.

Mochi: The Homecoming, and Before

We start our story in the summer of 2018. We decided that it was time to add a dog to our family, and that a Portuguese Water Dog puppy would be the best fit.

With some searching and some luck, I found that Karma Portuguese Water Dogs had a litter on the way, one of which was not yet promised to a family. We visited Anat at Karma in North Providence and signed up for one of the nine puppies in the litter.

The puppies were born on August 22, 2018. We were able to visit the adorable little bundles of fur and fun a couple of times, and to watch them on a video feed that Anat set up. Each puppy had a soft collar, and was identified by the color of that collar.

We got “Blue Girl”. Here’s the photo that Anat sent us when she texted us the news.
